Higher-order mimetic methods for unstructured meshes

چکیده
A higher-order mimetic method for the solution of partial differential equations on unstructured meshes is developed and demonstrated on the problem of conductive heat transfer. Mimetic discretization methods create discrete versions of the partial differential operators (such and the gradient and divergence) that are exact in some sense and therefore mimic the important mathematical properties of their continuous counterparts. The proposed numerical method is an interesting mixture of both finite volume and finite element ideas. While the ideas presented can be applied to arbitrarily high-order accuracy, we focus in this work on the details of creating a third-order accurate method. The proposed method is shown to be exact for piecewise quadratic solutions and shows third-order convergence on arbitrary triangular/tetrahedral meshes. The numerical accuracy of the method is confirmed on both two-dimensional and three-dimensional unstructured meshes. The computational cost required for a desired accuracy is analyzed against lower-order mimetic methods. 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The mimetic finite difference discretization of diffusion problem on unstructured polyhedral meshes
We study the mimetic finite difference discretization of diffusion-type problems on unstructured polyhedral meshes. We demonstrate high accuracy of the approximate solutions for general diffusion tensors, the second-order convergence rate for the scalar unknown and the first order convergence rate for the vector unknown on smooth or slightly distorted meshes, on non-matching meshes, and even on...
متن کاملThe mimetic finite difference method on polygonal meshes for diffusion-type problems
New mimetic discretizations of diffusion-type equations (for instance, equations modeling single phase Darcy flow in porous media) on unstructured polygonal meshes are derived. The first order convergence rate for the fluid velocity and the second-order convergence rate for the pressure on polygonal, locally refined and non-matching meshes are demonstrated with numerical experiments.

We present a new family of mimetic methods on unstructured polygonal meshes for the diffusion problem in primal form for solution with regularity C(Ω) for any integer α ≥ 0. These methods are derived from a local consistency condition that is exact for polynomials of degree m = α + 1. The degrees of freedom are (a) solution and derivative values of various degree at the mesh vertices and (b) so...

Application of the computer simulation for solving the incompressible flow problems motivates developing efficient and accurate numerical models. The set of Inviscid Incompressible Euler equations can be applied for wide range of engineering applications. For the steady state problems, the equation of continuity can be simultaneously solved with the equations of motion in a coupled manner using...

A family of inexpensive discretization schemes for diffusion problems on unstructured polygonal and polyhedral meshes is introduced. The material properties are described by a full tensor. The theoretical results are confirmed with numerical experiments.
